Ciao Pisano! In the decade that I have been publishing this site, I have learned that my family is not confined to the origin of my ancestors. The Magro's have spread across this planet far and wide, and speak many different languages.
Our branch of The Magro Family Tree stems from the hillsides of Monreale, Sicily where the Magro family owned and operated a grain mill.
Our family patriarch, Saverio Magro was at the end of a long line of siblings, having so many that his parents sent him out to become an apprentice shoemaker near Palermo, because there was not enough work for him at the family mill.
Saverio eventually emigrated to America, ariving October 26th, 1912 at age 26. As many other Sicilians did at the time he sailed to Ellis Island, New York via Naples, Italy on a passenger ship. Ellis Island records reveal the ship, The San Guglielmo, as later sunk by a German submarine.
Saverio went on to found Magro's Modern Shoe Store with Giuseppe Salerno who trained Saverio in shoe making back in Sicily. Saverio later married Giuseppe's daughter, Crocifissa Salerno.
The Magro's Modern Shoe Store is still owned and operated by the Magro Family today in Michigan City, Indiana. |
